How does Botulinum toxin work

Cosmetic form of Botulinum toxin type A used in aesthetic medicine is about a 1000x diluted nontoxic substance. Its effect lies in loosening muscle, which has a direct effect on the cause of wrinkles, i.e. muscular activity. Application of a very small dose of Botulinum toxin into the muscle temporarily disrupts nerve to muscle impulse transmission and the desired muscle loosening effect then flattens wrinkles and undesired mimicry, this prevents further deepening of wrinkles. However, over time the effect fades and this leads to muscle re-innervation. The effect is thus reversible, not permanent.

Course of procedure

This is an outpatient procedure, lasting just minutes. The application itself takes about 5 to 10 minutes. It is applied using a thin needle (so called insulin syringe and needle) under the skin into desired area. The needle administration is not significantly painful; it can be compared to a pinch, despite that it can be performed with local anesthesia. Immediately after treatment the skin can be a little red, this reddening will however disappear after several minutes. You can go back to your regular life right after treatment.
